Uninstall Diablo II Expansion
First, you'll need to uninstall Diablo II Expansion using the Diablo II Expansion uninstaller, located in the Diablo II Expansion program group on your Windows Start button.
Run Scandisk and Defrag
Now run a thorough scandisk and a defrag of your hard drive(s). To do this, click on the Windows Start button and then select "Run," type "scandisk," and then press Enter. Follow the prompts and select "Thorough" scandisk and let it run. This will tell you if there are any problems on the hard disk.
Next, click on the Windows Start button, select "Run," and type "scandisk." Follow the prompts to defrag your hard drive. This will make the available space more usable by your programs. You should disable your screen saver and Power Management features before you run scandisk or defrag. Sometimes, Windows will restart the defragmentation and/or scandisk if your screen saver or power management kicks in.
Reinstall Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
Now reinstall Diablo II: Lord of Destruction and download and install the latest Diablo II: Lord of Destruction patch from http://www.blizzard.com/support/information/d2patch.shtml.
Update your Video Drivers
If you still get any errors, you update your video- and sound-card drivers. This usually fixes most errors. Even if you are sure that your drivers are up-to-date, you should double check by visiting the manufacturer's website. If yourvideo card offers 3D acceleration, you can also check http://www.3dchipset.com for the most current drivers. If you find that you do indeed have the latest video- and sound-card drivers, reinstall them. It is easy to do, and it might solve your problem.
Here is some useful information for finding out what kind of sound and video card you've got and how to update your drivers.
Instructions for the installation of drivers should be available at the websites also, but not always. In some cases, the driver comes as an .exe file that installs itself when you double-click on it.
If it's a .zip file, you will want to create a folder for it and unzip it in that folder. Look for a Readme.txt file to appear when you unzip the file. This Readme file should give you the actual installation instructions.
Check if your system is over heating or overclocked
If your system is overclocked, it may be producing too much heat. This will adversely affect game performance. If the system is producing lots of heat but is not overclocked, you can add a fan to your system to help distribute heat within the case.
